It seems like such a quaint time, on retrospect. The Euro was established. Bill Clinton was the POTUS, and Columbine shootings shocked the world, Napster and MSN Messenger make their debuts. ExxonMobil becomes the largest corporation in the world. Stanley Kubrick died. The cinemas brought us Fight Club, The Matrix and Austin Powers. And Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moe.gov.sg\/media\/speeches\/1999\/sp270899.htm\">chided Phua Chu Kang for being a bad influence on children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9083 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/singapore-national-day-rally-1999.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/singapore-national-day-rally-1999.jpg 760w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/singapore-national-day-rally-1999-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Almost 20 years later, and wow, so much has changed.<\/p>\n<p>Times have changed. What&#8217;s changed?<\/p>\n<p>The Government&#8217;s official stance on this hasn&#8217;t changed very much.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"name\">Smart-alecky t-shirts. KNNBCCB. Opened the floodgates. Eh sia la, uh uh siol.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"name\">Singaporeans realize you don&#8217;t have to be one or the other. We don&#8217;t need to pretend to be in love with Colonial&#8230;. We can be articulate AND ah lian, thank you very much.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"name\">There&#8217;s more to it than meets the eye, though. Why are Singaporeans sudenly so patriotic, so nationalist? I was just a child in the 90s, but it seemed like those were simpler, happier times. People seemed to smile more and laugh more, fight and bicker less. Maybe it&#8217;s just a media thing\u2013 we now get to see the worst (and best, though!) of ourselves repeatedly on our screens, over and over.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"name\">Foreigners. Foreign talent. Foreign trash. Ah tiongs. Banglas. Pinoys. There are times and places in Singapore where you can stand around and not hear a single word of English. (This happened to me while I was waiting for a friend at I think Aljunied MRT). And sometimes it happens on the train.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<div>In 1999, the country\u2019s late great statesman Lee Kuan Yew declared Singlish \u201ca handicap we must not wish on Singaporeans.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In 2016, poet and literary critic Gwee Li Sui wrote an article in the New York Times titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/14\/opinion\/do-you-speak-singlish.html\">Do You Speak Singlish<\/a>. He focused on the political aspects of Singlish \u2013 how phrases like &#8220;Mee Siam Mai Hum&#8221;, &#8220;ownself check ownself&#8221; and &#8220;flip flop like prata&#8221;\u00a0become useful little fragments of \u00a0political resistance.\u00a0A way for ordinary citizens to\u00a0poke fun at the\u00a0stern solemnity of\u00a0bureaucratic government-speak.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You can&#8217;t make this up \u2013 The PM&#8217;s Press Secretary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/23\/opinion\/the-reality-behind-singlish.html\">responded to the piece<\/a>, saying that not everybody has a PhD\u00a0like Gwee Li Sui, and can code-switch the way he does.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>Not everyone has a Ph.D. in English Literature like Mr. Gwee, who can code-switch effortlessly between Singlish and standard English, and extol the virtues of Singlish in an op-ed written in polished standard English.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>Why she so like that?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In 2016, McDonald&#8217;s tells us that &#8220;now everybody also can atas&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mcdonalds-everyone-can-atas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9086 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mcdonalds-everyone-can-atas-1024x502.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mcdonalds-everyone-can-atas-1024x502.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mcdonalds-everyone-can-atas-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mcdonalds-everyone-can-atas-768x376.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mcdonalds-everyone-can-atas.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I find &#8220;Now everyone can atas&#8221; to be\u00a0<em>fascinating, <\/em>because it&#8217;s technically impossible. To be atas is to be high-class. It will never be possible\u00a0for everybody to be high-class. The middle-class can mimic and emulate the high class (notice how the burgers and wedges are presented, mimicking the stylings of the countless brunch places that have popped up over the past few years), but it&#8217;s a moving goalpost. Fashion is always changing because high-class people are always disgusted to be associated with the middle-class.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Notice, for example, how\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jetstar.com\/sg\/en\/because-jetstar-can\">JetStar has a Singlish page<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Corporate Singlish is a way of pandering to everyday Singaporeans. Notice that Singapore Airlines does <em>not<\/em> have a Singlish page, and it does not.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Singlish is and always will be a little uncouth, and that&#8217;s how we like it. It&#8217;s shorts and singlets and slippers. It&#8217;s eating with your hands and spitting out the bones on table.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/national-day-parade-lah.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9088 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/national-day-parade-lah.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/national-day-parade-lah.png 670w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/national-day-parade-lah-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A biologist named Lewis Thomas once\u00a0made a fascinating observation that language is something that the entire human species collaboratively\u00a0builds together.\u00a0Singlish is a Singaporean effort. It resists repression by the Singapore Government.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Most people do not have good english \u2013 you say it&#8217;s a bad influence on children, but is it not\u2026 there are 10k tv shows that have proper english and there&#8217;s one that&#8217;s accurate \u2013 are you saying that the way some people talk should not be reflected at all. You don&#8217;t talk in singlish at MPS? Comms is what works best not what looks best?
