I might write an ebook someday titled &#8220;jinky janky junkyard&#8221; or something to that effect. I&#8217;ll start with this blogpost, and grow it from here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jink<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-jink.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"589\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-jink.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-jink.png 589w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-jink-300x89.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jinking is a concept in aviation. <em>This maneuver is the sudden, rapid displacement of the aircraft&#8217;s flight path in three axes. This is used to confuse the enemy and prevent him from getting a good tracking solution, to avoid ground fire, or to avoid fragmentation patterns and ricochets<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Scooby-Doo, Velma&#8217;s catchphrase is &#8220;Jinkies!&#8221; \u2013 it&#8217;s similar in meaning to \u201coh my\u201d or \u201cwow\u201d, and &#8220;can be thought of as an expression of surprise&#8221;. This <a href=\"https:\/\/linguaholic.com\/linguablog\/jinkies-scooby-doo\/\">Linguaholic article<\/a> suggests that it was a word used by university-educated nerds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a consistent element of surprise. &#8220;Hijinks&#8221; seems related here as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s an Irish\/Scottish card game called Twenty-five, aka Spoilt Five, where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twenty-five_(card_game)#Jinking\">there&#8217;s a move called Jinking<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/jinking-cards.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"446\" height=\"179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/jinking-cards.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/jinking-cards.png 446w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/jinking-cards-300x120.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This does explain why the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/word\/jink\">etymonline page for &#8220;jink&#8221;<\/a> suggests that it&#8217;s of Scottish origin, and I wonder if the aviation term is downstream of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/vgr\/status\/1309706842138787840\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s some bits from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1989\/01\/29\/magazine\/on-language-high-jinks-and-low-bogeys.html\">1989 William Safire article<\/a> (nytimes.com), &#8220;On Language; High Jinks and Low Bogeys&#8221;. He writes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Jink? This verb is identified as &#8221;chiefly British&#8221; in Webster&#8217;s New World Dictionary and defined as &#8221;to move swiftly or with sudden turns, as in dodging a pursuer.&#8221; As a noun, it refers to &#8221;an eluding, as by a quick, sudden turn&#8221;; according to the usage by the American pilot facing the Libyan MIG-23&#8217;s, it also refers to sudden movements in an attack.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The intransitive verb <strong>jink<\/strong> is originally Scottish, and the Oxford English Dictionary speculates that it may be of onomatopoeic origin, &#8221;expressing the idea of nimble motion.&#8221; Maybe it&#8217;s also connected to <strong>jig<\/strong>, which has a meaning of &#8221;to move quickly,&#8221; as &#8221;in jig time.&#8221; Since 1914, <strong>jink<\/strong> has been applied to a tricky or unexpected turn in rugby, akin to a &#8221;dodge&#8221; in American football. It is also related to the last part of high jinks, or horseplay &#8211; and a warm hello to Jinx (short for Eugenia) Falkenburg McCrary, whose husband-and-wife radio interview program in the 1950&#8217;s began with &#8221;Hi, Jinx.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huh, I hadn&#8217;t thought about Jinx. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-jinx.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-jinx-1024x387.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-jinx-1024x387.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-jinx-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-jinx-768x290.png 768w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-jinx.png 1476w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, there&#8217;s more to get into there. According to Wikipedia, &#8220;A jinx (also jynx), in popular superstition and folklore, is a curse or the attribute of attracting bad or negative luck.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wryneck\">wryneck<\/a> is a kind of bird. They have &#8220;cryptic plumage&#8221;, can turn their heads almost 180 degrees, and they are sometimes called &#8220;snake-birds&#8221; because they twist their necks and hiss when threatened. Apparently this bird is used in the casting of spells and divination, and&#8230; in ancient Greek mythology there was a sorceress named <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iynx\">Iynx<\/a> \u2013 a nymph, a daughter of Pan and Echo, who cast a spell on Zeus which made him fall in love with Io. And Hera punished her for this by transforming her into a wryneck bird. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then somehow this term started getting used in baseball. Language is wild, I tell ya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jank<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Janky&#8221; can mean something untrustworthy or suspicious. There&#8217;s an origin in 90&#8217;s AAVE &#8220;janky-ass bitch&#8221;, and it also seems to have cropped up in nerdy contexts like card games (&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/hearthstone\/comments\/303y69\/so_reynad_just_climbed_about_800_ranks_in_legend\/cpp14l3\/\">janky deck<\/a>&#8220;), computing (&#8220;janky code&#8221;, &#8220;janky hardware&#8221;), and other mechanical domains (&#8220;janky old boat&#8221;, &#8220;janky little tractor&#8221;). I find myself imagining something that&#8217;s sputtering and smoking, a janky engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jank_(band)\">rock band from Philadelphia called Jank<\/a>, stylized as JANK (or J A N K !), and they played&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.culturecreature.com\/jank-interview-matt-diamond\/\">weed pop<\/a>. &#8220;Emo-stoners&#8221;, &#8220;jubilant, grunge-y pop&#8221;, with song titles like &#8220;Grim Reefer&#8221; and &#8220;General Tso What?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a patio11 thread on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/patio11\/status\/1650956361214095361\">the jank in financial systems<\/a> being a consequence of different people wanting different things<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Junk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the three words, junk is the word that&#8217;s used the most, and has the most history, connotations, uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-junk.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"756\" height=\"621\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-junk.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-junk.png 756w, https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/etym-junk-300x246.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are at least 4 different albums called Junk, and even Paul McCartney has a 1968 song called Junk. There are a couple of movies, an American one from 1920 and a Japanese Yakuza zombie film from 2000. There&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Junk_food#Origin_of_the_term\">junk food<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Junk_mail\">junk mail<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Junk_bond&amp;redirect=no\">junk bonds<\/a>, a class of sailing vessel, slang for heroin as well as both dick (&#8220;he groped my junk&#8221;) and ass &#8220;she got a lotta junk in that trunk!&#8221;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite junk word is <strong>junkyard<\/strong>. I described Roam Research as a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/magic-junkyard\/\">magic junkyard<\/a>&#8220;, and it&#8217;s a phrase that&#8217;s caught on with other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wikipedia page for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wrecking_yard\">Junkyard<\/a> redirects to &#8220;Wrecking yard&#8221; as the master page. It&#8217;s interesting that that gets top billing, when the British word is &#8220;scrapyard&#8221; and the American is &#8220;junkyard&#8221;.
