{"id":9623,"date":"2009-04-20T16:07:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-20T16:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/archives\/2009\/04\/20\/01-a-day-in-the-life\/"},"modified":"2022-04-10T14:33:59","modified_gmt":"2022-04-10T14:33:59","slug":"01-a-day-in-the-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/archives\/2009\/04\/20\/01-a-day-in-the-life\/","title":{"rendered":"#01: A day in the life."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The day begins.<\/p>\n<p>My mum wakes me up,<br \/>\nworried I&#8217;d be late for school.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m strongly tempted to whine or complain.<br \/>\nI choose not to.<br \/>\nI play my cards right.<\/p>\n<p>I shower, get dressed, leave for school.<br \/>\nThe bus comes before I finish my cigarette,<br \/>\nbut I decide to board it anyway.<br \/>\nI make it to school on time.<br \/>\nI play my cards right.<\/p>\n<p>Morning assembly is uneventful.<br \/>\nGP lecture is about war and terrorism.<br \/>\nI feel strongly about it.<br \/>\nThe images do nothing.<br \/>\nI am desensitized to the images<br \/>\nafter all these years.<\/p>\n<p>Maths lecture puts me to sleep.<br \/>\nI probably seem awake.<br \/>\nI flit in and out of consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>I eat mee goreng instead of fishball noodles<br \/>\nor chicken rice during my break.<br \/>\nIt is bland.<br \/>\nBut I wouldn&#8217;t have been sure if I didn&#8217;t try.<br \/>\nI play my cards right.<\/p>\n<p>Economics is uneventful.<br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t do my homework,<br \/>\nbut I can follow the lesson fine. <\/p>\n<p>History is good.<br \/>\nI reflect about what it must have been like to be a communist.<br \/>\nMust really suck to be denied citizenship<br \/>\nand exiled from your homeland.<br \/>\nEspecially when you genuinely believed,<br \/>\nwith sweat and blood and tears, that<br \/>\nyou were fighting for its future.<\/p>\n<p>~~~<\/p>\n<p>I am really sleepy. The weather is stiflingly hot.<br \/>\nI fall asleep for an hour or so under the blocks across the road from school.<br \/>\nI wake up surrounded by the usual people.<br \/>\nThe weather is still blazing hot. <\/p>\n<p>The ice cold, sinfully thick oreo-vanilla from the bubble tea shop<br \/>\nclog up my throat wonderfully.<\/p>\n<p>I am strongly tempted to leave school, but I have CCA commitments.<br \/>\nI decide to stay and see it through. It is vaguely entertaining.<br \/>\nI will be getting my Ex-Co credits on my SGC.<br \/>\nI play my cards right.<\/p>\n<p>I am face to face with something<br \/>\nwhich has bothered me for the longest time.<br \/>\nI realise now, well and truly,<br \/>\nthat it is beyond my control.<br \/>\nSometimes I have to accept<br \/>\nthat I will be misinterpeted<br \/>\nand unfairly judged.<br \/>\nIt is a great weight off my shoulders.<br \/>\nI feel empowered.<br \/>\nI play my cards right.<\/p>\n<p>~~~<\/p>\n<p>We are close again, these days.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know what to make of it.<br \/>\nWe are far more responsible than self-aware than before.<br \/>\nWe&#8217;ve grown up quite abit since then.<br \/>\nIt will never be the same again, but why should it be?<\/p>\n<p>To be honest,<br \/>\nI&#8217;m not sure if we should even still be seeing each other.<br \/>\nWe&#8217;ll take it a step at a time and see where the wind takes us.<br \/>\nI am really tired and tempted to go home,<br \/>\nbut I decide to send her to where she has to go.<br \/>\nI know it will make her day. It does.<br \/>\nI would not have done that three years ago.<br \/>\nI surprise myself.<br \/>\nI play my cards right.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know what to expect or hope for,<br \/>\nand I&#8217;m really quite fine with that.<\/p>\n<p>~~~<\/p>\n<p>I meet two different old friends on the way home,<br \/>\nand it is very pleasant. Everybody&#8217;s growing up.<br \/>\nI talk to yet another old friend on MSN when I get home.<br \/>\nIt is challenging, fulfilling and fairly entertaining.<br \/>\nI play my cards right.<\/p>\n<p>I end the day<br \/>\nwith an time-honoured ritual,<br \/>\nwith a trust-honoured friend.<br \/>\nSo with the comfort of familiarity<br \/>\nand the assurance of certainty;<br \/>\nThe day ends.<\/p>\n<p>I realise now, better late than never,<br \/>\nthat it doesn&#8217;t matter what hand I&#8217;m dealt.<br \/>\nSometimes it&#8217;s good, sometimes it&#8217;s bad.<br \/>\nBut it doesn&#8217;t matter in the end.<\/p>\n<p>All that really matters is that<br \/>\nI play my cards right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The day begins.
