{"id":9612,"date":"2009-03-08T12:33:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-08T12:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/archives\/2009\/03\/08\/isa-detainee\/"},"modified":"2009-03-08T12:33:00","modified_gmt":"2009-03-08T12:33:00","slug":"isa-detainee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/archives\/2009\/03\/08\/isa-detainee\/","title":{"rendered":"ISA Detainee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Below is a poem written by Mr Tan Jing Quee was was detained in 1963 by Mr Lee Kuan Yew under Operation Coldstore.<\/p>\n<p>ISA Detainee<br \/>\nby Tan Jing Quee<\/p>\n<p>What was it like &#8216;inside&#8217;?<br \/>\nA difficult question<br \/>\nCould you, would you really listen<br \/>\nWithout sneer, to the endeavours<br \/>\nHow should I begin?<br \/>\nShould I start from the traumas of the raid<br \/>\nHow liberty was so capriciously enchained<br \/>\nWithout a warrant, without warning<br \/>\nOn the dark hours<br \/>\nWhen even dogs slept undisturbed.<\/p>\n<p>You were hauled into a world ran amok:<br \/>\nThe mug shots, &#8216;turn out your pockets&#8217;<br \/>\nthe thumb and fingers impressions<br \/>\n(whatever for, I commit no crime!)<br \/>\nNo one bothered,<br \/>\nThe guard shoved you on,<br \/>\nAlong the corridor of despair;<br \/>\nThat first heavy thud of the iron door<br \/>\nSealing you incommunicado from the world &#8212;<br \/>\nThe wind, sun, moon, and the stars<br \/>\nAnd all that was human and dear.<\/p>\n<p>Should I recall the dark cell<br \/>\nAt Central Police Station<br \/>\nA purgatory of perpetual night<br \/>\nThe stone slab for the bed<br \/>\nSullied, soiled mattress, no sheets<\/p>\n<p>Blood smeared walls, cries of past agonies<br \/>\nThe rude, cruel hourly rip-rap of the shuttlers<br \/>\n&#8220;To check your health&#8221;,<br \/>\nSo it was explained.<\/p>\n<p>Should I narrate<br \/>\nThe daily bath at the tap<br \/>\nThe Squat pan, dank and putrid<br \/>\nMeant to dehumanize, humiliate.<\/p>\n<p>Should we be thankful<br \/>\nFor the daily ditch water<br \/>\nwhich passed for tea<br \/>\nThe stony crumbs for bread<br \/>\nThe rice so callously tossed with dust?<br \/>\nShould we be grateful<br \/>\nFor the censored books and news,<br \/>\nTo decontaminate our minds;<br \/>\nShould we be grateful too<br \/>\nFor the unbearable heat<br \/>\nThe lonely insomnia of the day and night,<br \/>\nMigraine and diarrhoeic fever<br \/>\nAnd panadol as panacea?<\/p>\n<p>How could I ever forget those Neanderthals<br \/>\nWho roamed Whitely Holding Centre,<br \/>\nUnder cover of darkness,<br \/>\nPoured buckets of lice water<br \/>\nOver my stripped, shivering nakedness,<br \/>\nSlugged my struggling, painful agony<\/p>\n<p>Circling, sneering, snarling<br \/>\nOver my freezing nudity,<br \/>\nMore animals than men;<br \/>\nWhat induced this<br \/>\nVengeful venom, violent score<br \/>\nTo settle, not for a private grievance<br \/>\nBut a public, democratic dissidence;<br \/>\nFrom whence sprang this barbarity?<br \/>\nWhat made men turn into beasts<br \/>\nIn the dark, away from prying eyes,<br \/>\nProtected by a code of dishonour and lies<br \/>\nTo ensure they survive and rise.<\/p>\n<p>For sure, there were gentler souls<br \/>\nWho tried to be decent, no more:<br \/>\nThe smiling guard who lightened the hours<br \/>\nWith a chance remark, a joke<br \/>\nThe barber who brought his scissors, cigarettes and news<br \/>\nThe interrogator who handed a bible<br \/>\nTold him the elegant prose<br \/>\nContrasted strangely with my current state,<br \/>\nHow distant those beautiful thoughts were<br \/>\nFrom the violence to our liberty.<\/p>\n<p>What then is the truth?<br \/>\nA generation trapped in lies<br \/>\nWho rushed to defend, to justify<br \/>\nNever to listen, see, or speak out.<br \/>\nOnly when we open our hearts<br \/>\nConfront this barbarism<br \/>\nCan we truly exorcise our fears,<br \/>\nFinally emerge as a free people,<br \/>\nA liberated society.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Below is a poem written by Mr Tan Jing Quee was was detained in 1963 by Mr Lee Kuan Yew under Operation Coldstore.
