{"id":12286,"date":"2018-04-07T14:14:06","date_gmt":"2018-04-07T06:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/blog\/?p=12286"},"modified":"2018-04-07T14:14:06","modified_gmt":"2018-04-07T06:14:06","slug":"bottlenecks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visakanv.com\/archives\/2018\/04\/07\/bottlenecks\/","title":{"rendered":"a system can only be improved at its tightest bottleneck"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I&#8217;ve been thinking a lot about <a href=\"https:\/\/praxis.fortelabs.co\/theory-of-constraints-101-2d4d9cf1916a\">Tiago Forte&#8217;s point about bottlenecks<\/a> \u2013 that the only meaningful improvement you can make in any system is at its tightest bottleneck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Progress at the second tightest bottleneck is unhelpful \u2013 you either just add extra stress on the tighter bottleneck ahead, or create capacity that goes unused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If you&#8217;re trying to strengthen a chain, focusing on anything other than the weakest link is unproductive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So&#8230; what are my own bottlenecks?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first big one is sleep. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1073503269824081920\">When I don&#8217;t sleep well,<\/a> everything else suffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do I not sleep well?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stress. Stimulants. Fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have to dig into that in much more detail, really understand it, break it down into actionable steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shame is another bottleneck. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1086333252523053057\">You can&#8217;t learn from your mistakes if you&#8217;re ashamed of them<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>shame -&gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1043937727371071488\">fear of responsibility<\/a>, another bottleneck<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1008513920821178368\">aversion to schedules<\/a> is another bottleneck, compounded by shame<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I feel like the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1108320302537203712\">bottleneck for SG&#8217;s growth isn&#8217;t the govt, it&#8217;s the citizens<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1010379577728774146\">persuasion ability as a bottleneck<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1057285710674194432\">dishonesty as a bottleneck<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1112464295311241216\">fear of ostracization as a bottleneck<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/866492381452935168\">energy management as a bottleneck<\/a> \u2013 leads to sleep<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1033999195672203264\">self-concept as a bottleneck<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1079005248985780227\">insensitivity as a bottleneck<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been thinking a lot about Tiago Forte&#8217;s point about bottlenecks \u2013 that the only meaningful improvement you can make in any system is at its tightest bottleneck.
