I read it roughly when it came out, and there was a line  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Animal Farm, George Orwell \u2013 first read this in school. It was such a short and simple read, and it so effectively conveyed so much about how power works. I also really like several of Orwell&#8217;s essays, including <a href=\"http:\/\/visakanv.com\/blog\/politics-and-the-english-language\">Politics and the English Language<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orwell.ru\/library\/articles\/nose\/english\/e_nose\">In Front Of Your Nose<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/orwell.ru\/library\/essays\/wiw\/english\/e_wiw\">Why I Write<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Body Keeps The Score, Bessel van der Kolk [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/981357303583485952\">book thread<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sideways Look At Time, Jay Griffiths<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tribe, by Sebastian Junger [book thread]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antifragile, Nassim Taleb \u2013 I read it when it first came out, and I remember thinking over and over again that I was such an idiot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Courage To Be Disliked [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1037715339314847747\">book thread<\/a>] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stuff Matters, by Mark Miodownik [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1101762095186497541\">book thread<\/a>] \u2013 I really enjoy Mark&#8217;s storytelling style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Debt, by David Graeber [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visakanv\/status\/1065534592793305089\">book thread<\/a>] \u2013 very mind-expanding re: money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nasty Bits, Anthony Bourdain \u2013 collection of essays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soul Made Flesh, Carl Zimmer \u2013 about the discovery of the human brain. Zimmer is a fantastic storyteller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Checklist Manifesto \u2013 honestly, you can compress this entire book into a tweet: If you need to do things, make lists, and check them off. Medical professionals who do this literally save more lives than those who don&#8217;t. Airplanes crash less when people do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chocolate War, Robert Cormier \u2013 read as a child<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lost Illusions, Balzac \u2013 read in NS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The User Illusion, Tor Norretranders \u2013 read in NS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His Dark Materials \u2013 read as a child<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls \u2013 read on a long bus ride to Genting with friends<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satan Burger, by Carlton Mellick \u2013 bizzaro, surreal <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The News: A User&#8217;s Manual, by Alain de Botton \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Made To Stick, Dan and Chip Heath \u2013 improved my marketing and messaging skills significantly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inspired by Nick Cammerata&#8217;s and Patrick Collison&#8217;s bookshelves.
