📺 tv shows I’ve watched and liked

TV Shows that I really loved, recommend and would rewatch

  1. Arcane
  2. Andor
  3. The West Wing – great conversations, convictions, inspiring characters. Favorite TV show of all time. I might be due for a rewatch soon.
  4. Sense8 – unexpected new favorite! I remember when I first heard about the show – I thought it would be something like Heroes, which I was oddly put off by. I was put off by the premise, I thought it was going to be cheesy and bad. But then my wife watched it and said she liked it, and I thought that was interesting because I like the Matrix (also by the Wachowskis) and she hasn’t watched it yet. So I watched it with her and really loved it.
  5. Bojack Horseman (Watched all 3 seasons so far) – bleak, sad, honest. Looking forward to the next season. Hoping things get better for Bojack, but not expecting it.
  6. Horace and Pete – dark, painful, depressing, bleak. Really looking forward to what Louis CK does next. It’s more like theater than TV.
  7. [2018] La Casa Del Papel – really good characters, storytelling, pacing
  8. Luther – intense, dark
  9. Breaking Bad – was late to this. As everyone says, it’s one of the best shows on TV. It definitely takes its time – each season is better than the last. It’s a bit of a slow burn.
  10. The Expanse – Unexpected new favorite! Like a cross between Mass Effect and Ender’s Game. Lots of interesting decision-making situations for people to be in, and the characters are mostly smart, mostly trying to make good decisions, and there are no outright villains.
  11. Master of None. Aziz isn’t the best actor, and he knows it, and he makes up for it very well with his choices.
  12. Westworld – one thing I can say about this show is that once I got started, I felt very compelled to watch all of it and get to the end – and it’s only one season so far. It took me effort to avoid spoilers. I thought it was very intelligent, very well done. Anthony Hopkins is an amazing actor. And there are a couple of other great actors in the show, too. There’s a single scene that makes the entire show worth watching, for me.
  13. Rick And Morty – delightfully trippy fun, and dares to be dark and harsh where it needs to be. Great continuity.
  14. Dear White People – very, very satisfying to watch, as a minority. Just to see a show that isn’t primarily about white people. Looking forward to the next season. (Update: Season 2 is good too, overall!)
  15. Narcos – interesting choice of subject matter, and there’s something immersive about the cinematography. Got me interested in South American history, and in the history of drugs. Interesting to compare and contrast with Breaking Bad.
  16. Arrested Development – inside jokes and references game insanely good
  17. The Office (US) – bureaucracy! Worth watching while reading the Gervais Principle. Also compare and contrast with Office Space, the movie.
  18. Silicon Valley – finally got around to watching this in Aug 2016. Wish I got to it sooner! It’s not super amazing, but it’s fun and so familiar. Just started watching Season 4. (Jul 2017 – just finished S4).

TV shows I watched and kinda liked

  • Better Call Saul – If you’ve watched Breaking Bad, you’ll want to watch Better Call Saul. I like the relationship between the protagonist and his roommate / friend.
  • Don’t Trust the B—– in Apartment 23 – Actually a lot better than it sounds. Don’t think I’d rewatch, but it’s good.
  • The IT Crowd – first season was slightly cringe, but it moves fast and it’s ok. It gets a lot better and funnier from there.
  • Orange is the New Black – It’s smart and refreshing in many ways, and it draws attention to all these characters and narratives you seldom get. And yet… something about it doesn’t quite hit the spot for me.
  • How I Met Your Mother – really liked the first 5 or so seasons, but then lost interest.
  • Parks & Recreation – watched the first season or so, kinda liked it but never got along to finishing it.
  • House of Cards – found it kinda draggy and the dark/shadowy elements were kinda overdone, but I appreciate what they were doing
  • Orange Is The New Black – watched the first season, and bits and pieces of the second two as my wife watched it. I liked the backstories of the characters, and the black women in particular were really good characters.
  • Prison Break – watched Seasons 1, 2 and 3. The first two were really good, I thought. Got kinda draggy.
  • House – watched bits and pieces throughout, enjoyed it
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – I like Kimmy and Xanthippe, I find the rest of the cast kinda annoying.
  • Sex and the City – I watched a bunch of it with the wife. It’s aged really badly.

TV shows I’ve tried but haven’t really made progress on

  • Rick and Morty. I’d supposedly like it. Update: Watched it, loved it, would rewatch.
  • Adventure Time – same as ^, haven’t watched yet.
  • Black Mirror – It’s just kind of tiring to watch because so many of the episodes are so emotionally exhausting. It’s work. The show is good, and I look forward to finishing it. So far, my favorite episode is probably San Junipero.
  • House Of Cards – like Black Mirror, I find HoC emotionally draining to watch. I couldn’t really get into the 2nd season after I was done with the first. Have since been able to watch more thanks to Video Speed Controller. But I’m in no rush. It makes for decent background noise.
  • Mad Men – Advertising is one of my interests. But the show hasn’t really drawn me in yet.

TV shows I’ve never really found compelling enough to keep watching

  • Designated Survivor – This got me so mad. I loved the premise, I loved the first couple of episodes, but then it just got so bad – the characters started behaving stupidly, communicating poorly, I just couldn’t take it.
  • Simpsons
  • Girlboss – wanted to like it, but so terribly done
  • Big Bang Theory – geek blackface
  • Scandal – ew
  • Family Guy
  • 30 Rock – I dunno, I just don’t really get it

Shows I really wanna watch

  • Star Trek – Watched the first couple of episodes of the original series, with my wife. Hilariously sexist.
  • Louie
  • Frasier
  • Scrubs
  • Yes Minister
  • Battlestar Galactica
  • Scrubs
  • The Wire
  • The Sopranos
