Elections 2011: Suppose the opposition doesn’t win a single seat.

Be disappointed. It’s okay to be disappointed, but don’t be upset, and please, don’t do anything rash like migrate in a fit of anger, thinking “My God, Singapore is hopeless.”

We’re making progress as a citizenry. We’re making progress even if we don’t quite reach the critical mass we need to make a significant change in Parliament. The trend can only continue from here- in fact, I’d say it’s likely to accelerate. More young people will get involved. More old people will pass on, perhaps even Lee Kuan Yew. That will change things, and most probably for the better.

The PAP will not remain the same. I imagine that the PAP will be forced to be more sensible and less arrogant over the next 5 years after this election, EVEN if they win every seat- because if they don’t, then they’re totally screwed in 2016- everybody will be watching their every move from now on.

Even if this General Election doesn’t work out the way we want it to, things can only get better from here. Our duty and role as an engaged citizenry remains, even after the election fever ends. We must make a commitment to maintain this sense of scrutiny, of interest, of concern. We must pressure our ministers to be accountable, to serve the nation well, whatever it takes.

Things can only get better from here.

Majulah Singapura.

Visakan, I salute you for your vision and advice.
If you are elected into parliament, please make sure you support rewriting and strengthen the Constitution to uphold citizen rights. Please ensure Singapore could follow the UN guidelines on good governance. Please make sure we have first world parliament instead of one-party parliament. Thank you.

You’re too kind! Unfortunately I don’t think I have the discipline and patience needed for politics- and I think I will be able to do more good from outside and around the system than from within it!

      Thank you! :)

No, it’s not ok if the opposition doesn’t win a single seat. Five years of hell await us!!!

I think it’ll be more like purgatory! :D

That isn’t want I want either, of course. Just imagining the worst case scenario.
